Middlewoods of Newington is the Perfect Senior Living Community for You

Aging & Caregiving

newington ct senior living communityWith all the assisted living options available to you in Hartford County, why would so many people stop looking after they’ve visited Middlewoods of Newington? Perhaps it was the one-floor living that was most appealing. Maybe it was the strong sense of family they felt when they walked through the door. It might have even been the warm, welcoming interactions they had with the Middlewoods staff and residents that left them feeling at ease.

Believe it or not, it is pretty common for the prospective resident and their family to realize they want to become a part of this special community even after one phone call. How can that be?

It is intentional that we use the phrase “Caring Relationships, Enriching Lives”. Being part of a not for-profit organization means the way we care for our residents is driven by our mission. Our focus on relationship-centered care is at the heart of all we do.

Here are just a few of the many reasons why Middlewoods of Newington leaves such a strong impression and stands out among the rest!

4 Reasons Middlewoods of Newington is the Perfect Senior Living Community

1.Relationship-Centered Approach to Care

Middlewoods of Newington is a place where everyone knows your name.

It starts with your first contact with the community. Our Executive Director takes the time to get to know residents and their families from the very first time they contact the community. Soon all the staff are greeting residents, their families, friends and even pets.

Staff take the time to help new residents transition into life at the community by getting to know them and how they take their coffee; their hobbies, the people closest to their heart, and how have they found meaning in their life.

Also, throughout the day, it is not uncommon to see staff and residents reading the newspaper together, chatting over family photos, taking a stroll outdoors, or “Skyping” with a family member.

We go beyond just finding out where they lived and what they did for a living.

2. Locally Owned and Managed with a 140-Year Mission of Caring

Middlewoods of Newington is owned and operated by United Methodist Homes (UMH), a local, faith-based, not-for-profit organization based in Shelton, Connecticut.

UMH began their mission of caring for seniors more than 125 years ago and we continue this legacy of caring by offering a unique relationship-centered approach to everything that we do.

Simply stated, our mission, which has been developed over 140 years is: To provide a continuum of services that supports health, independence, and dignity. We build this continuum on the belief that a relationship-centered philosophy best sustains body, mind, and spirit.

So what does this actually mean for our residents, families and staff? Well, first of all, being part a mission-based organization, it means that the decisions we make as a community are focused on doing the right thing for our residents and staff. We believe this is one of the reasons our residents and staff stay at Middlewoods of Newington for so many years. Secondly, it means that we measure our success not by financial returns, but by the gratitude we receive from those we serve. That is why the phrase, “Caring Relationships, Enriching Lives” is so important.

3. Award-Winning Activities Programs

So why is the activities programs at Middlewoods of Newington so special? What makes them unique and different from any other assisted living community?

To begin with, the staff at Middlewoods of Newington take the time to get to know what residents truly enjoy about life. We learn their likes and dislikes. We learn about their life experiences, their hobbies, their professions, their memories….and we build our activity programs around these very things! Rather than create a calendar of cookie-cutter activities, our attention to the details of our residents’ lives makes all the difference.

Whether we are cooking up a resident’s favorite family recipe (i.e. corn fritters, crème de menthe cake, zucchini bread with pineapple), transplanting flowers from a resident’s garden into our own community garden, or getting all dressed up for a special event, holiday party, or other shenanigan, we put all of our effort into creating activities that inspire a sense of fun, a sense of community, and a sense of belonging for our residents.

4. All-Inclusive Monthly Rental

Residents can enjoy a cozy and comfortable studio, deluxe studio, or one bedroom apartment close to everything they need! The basic monthly rental includes: the rental of the apartment (with furniture if needed!); all utilities (including local telephone, long distance calls made within the continental United States, and expanded cable television); customized weekly housekeeping and personal laundry and linen services; maintenance, landscaping and snow removal services; three full meals a day served in our dining room; 24-hour staffing and security; scheduled transportation to medical appointments, errands, and a variety of fun destinations; access to all community amenities, YMCA membership with swimming pool, and a full calendar of social educational, cultural, recreational, spiritual, and wellness programs.

Selecting an Assisted or Independent Living community is one of the most important decisions an older adult and their families will make. Understanding what life is really like once you move in is critical to making the right decision. At the end of the day, the pretty light fixtures and hotel-like amenities are not necessarily what is most important to living a meaningful life. What matters most is the culture of the community; opportunities for relationships, trust, consistency of care, comfort and safety, and a lifestyle that promotes independence, dignity, and choice.
