veterans benefits senior livingMany Veterans and their spouses are at or are getting to the age where independent and assisted living options may need to be explored. While many Veterans already live in such communities, some may be in the process of making the decision to move into a senior care community and it is important to know what resources and veteran benefits may be available to them.

There are a variety of benefits for Veterans and their spouses who move into assisted living communities. Financial benefits from the government may be available for those who qualify that help cover the cost of assisted and independent living as well as other eligible services. Those who have served during wartime often find that some of the most vivid memories of their lives occurred during these years. It was a time of great strength, courage and accomplishment; a time of sacrifice, loss and great sadness. Moving into a senior care community allows Veterans to continue to share their stories with others of similar experiences and connect with different generations who can learn from their experiences.

Many Veterans are proud of their accomplishments and the communities where they live plan events to honor them and provide forums to share their personal stories. Communities often plan special commemorations of holidays such as Veterans Day, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and Memorial Day.

Financially, the United States Department of Veteran Affairs has several benefits for those who have served our country. Oftentimes, Veterans and their spouses are not aware of the benefits that are available to them. There are several websites that explain the benefits that could be available to pay for assisted living and there are senior care homes that hold events to share this information.

About Elizabeth Bemis

In 1998, I drove past an assisted living community construction site, learned that it was part of United Methodist Homes and realized the next stop on my professional journey was to work for a mission driven organization. Soon after, I joined the team as Executive Director of our Middlewoods of Farmington community and later served as Regional Manager for the Middlewoods properties before accepting my current role as Vice President of Marketing, Promotions, and Assisted Living Operations. I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking, reading, walking, and love working alongside our staff, residents, and families to build strong communities that reflect the mission, vision, and values of United Methodist Homes.

Our Blog is a 2016 Platinum Generations Award Winner! The Generations Award is an annual international competition for excellence in senior marketing recognizing professionals who have communicated to the 50+ Mature Markets.
